How to Load a Dumpster Without Overfill or Overweight Fees

Load heavy, flat debris on the floor first, spread it evenly end to end, break down bulky items, and fill gaps with small debris. Stop when the load is level with the top rim. Concrete and dirt stop halfway up the walls. Overfilled loads can't legally go on the road.

What is the right order to load a dumpster?

Load in this order: heavy, flat items on the floor, bulky items broken down on top, then small debris to fill gaps. Spread weight evenly from front to back so the truck can lift the dumpster safely. Keep the area around the doors clear.

  1. Plan the far end firstStart at the end away from the door and work back, so you can keep walking in.
  2. Heavy and flat on the bottomDoors, plywood, drywall sheets and tile lie flat on the floor.
  3. Break down the bulky itemsTake legs off tables, cut sofas apart, flatten every box.
  4. Fill the gapsBagged debris and small pieces go into the spaces between larger items.
  5. Stop at the rimLevel with the top edge. Nothing sticking up or out.

Why can't debris go above the top of the dumpster?

Debris above the rim can blow or fall onto the road. Texas Transportation Code § 725.021 requires vehicles carrying loose material to keep it from blowing or spilling. An overfilled dumpster can't be hauled as is, so a $125 dry-run fee applies and the extra must come out.

Read the statute at statutes.capitol.texas.gov.

How do I load concrete, dirt or brick?

Heavy debris goes only in a 10 or 15-yard dumpster and only halfway up the walls, because of highway weight limits for the truck. Spread it evenly across the floor rather than piling it at one end, and keep it unmixed to qualify for clean-fill pricing.

More on the concrete and dirt dumpster page.

How do I keep the dumpster from getting heavier than it needs to be?

Keep rain out and keep strangers out. Wet drywall, carpet and wood soak up water you pay for at $75 per ton, and neighbors' junk adds weight and banned items to your bill. A tarp over the top solves both.

Check what can go in a dumpster before you start, so paint cans and batteries never land in the bin.

FAQ

Loading questions

How full can I fill a dumpster?

Fill a dumpster level with the top rim and no higher. Concrete, dirt, brick and sand only go halfway up the walls in a 10 or 15-yard.

What happens if I overfill the dumpster?

The driver can't haul it. A $125 dry-run fee applies and the excess must come out before the truck returns for pickup.

Can neighbors put things in my dumpster?

They can if it's open and unattended, and you pay for their weight and any banned items. Keep it where you can see it, and tarp it at night.

What's the fastest way to load a dumpster?

Break down furniture and boxes, lay flat pieces on the floor first, and fill gaps with small debris as you go. Load the far end first and work back toward the door.
