What fits in a 40-yard dumpster?
A 40-yard dumpster holds about 12 to 16 pickup-truck loads. Its 8-foot walls are too tall to throw debris over by hand, so it suits jobs loaded by a crew or a skid steer rather than a homeowner working alone.
Typical jobs that fit:
- Demolition of a garage, barn or outbuilding (no concrete)
- New-construction framing scrap, sheathing and packaging for a whole house
- A commercial interior tear-out: ceilings, partitions, carpet and fixtures
- A large single-layer roof, about 40 squares
Examples are typical, not guaranteed. Bulky items like sofas leave gaps, so they take more room than their size suggests.

How much can a 40-yard dumpster hold before it's overweight?
A 40-yard dumpster includes 5 tons, or 10,000 pounds, the most of any size we haul. That covers about 40 squares of single-layer shingles at 80-pound bundles, since 40 × 240 pounds is 9,600 pounds. Bulky framing scrap and packaging rarely reach 5 tons.
Demolition debris is where a 40-yard gets heavy: plaster, tile and wet drywall fill the tons before the space. At 5.6 tons net, you pay for 0.6 tons, or 1,200 pounds: $45 at $75 per ton. Concrete, dirt, brick and sand aren't allowed in the 40-yard; they go in a 10 or 15-yard filled halfway.

Where can a 40-yard dumpster go?
A 40-yard dumpster needs a hard, level spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, the same footprint as a 20 or 30-yard. At 8 feet tall it needs the most overhead room of any size, so check for low wires and branches above the drop spot and the truck path.
Our drivers set wooden boards under the steel rails so the dumpster doesn't crack or scratch concrete or asphalt. Keep it off septic lids, sprinkler heads and soft grass. Street placement may need a city permit; the driveway placement guide covers both.
Is the 40-yard too small or too big for my job?
Choose the 30-yard if the job is a residential addition or a full house cleanout; its 6-foot walls are easier to load by hand and it includes 4 tons. Stay with the 40-yard for demolition, new construction and commercial jobs where a crew or machine does the loading.
What's included with every 40-yard rental?
Delivery, pickup, 7 days and 5 tons come with the 40-yard. After that: $25 per extra day, $75 per ton over, $50 per tire, mattress or Freon appliance, and $125 if the truck can't reach the spot. Full details are on the dumpster rental cost guide.
