What size dumpster do I need for my roof?

A single-layer roof up to about 15 squares fits a 15-yard dumpster, up to about 25 squares a 20-yard, and larger roofs a 30-yard. Weight, not space, sets the limit on shingles, so a second layer usually means the next size up or a swap.

40 squares9,600 lb (4.8 t)19,200 lb (9.6 t)1 layer: 40-yard · 2 layers: 40-yard plus a swap

Weights assume 80-lb bundles, 3 bundles per square. Swap in your own bundle weight from the wrapper. Included weight: 15-yard 2.5 t, 20-yard 3 t, 30-yard 4 t; $75/ton over.

How much does a roof tear-off weigh?

One square of asphalt shingles weighs the bundle weight times the bundles per square. With 80-pound bundles and 3 bundles per square, one square is 240 pounds, and a 25-square roof is 6,000 pounds, or 3 tons: exactly what the 20-yard includes.

Felt, nails and drip edge add a little; rotted decking adds more. Wet shingles weigh more on the scale, so tarp the dumpster if rain is coming. Every extra ton is $75, billed by the exact pound, and the certified scale ticket is attached to the invoice.

Can the dumpster be there before my crew arrives?

Book by 3 PM and the dumpster is delivered the next day between 7 AM and 5 PM, so you can have it on site the evening before a tear-off. The driver texts or calls 20 to 30 minutes ahead. Same-day delivery may be possible when a truck is open, for a $50 rush fee.

Tell us the drop zone. Set the dumpster close to the eave where shingles come off, on the driveway with boards under the rails, and keep it clear of landscaping the crew needs to protect.

Do I need a debris chute for a roof tear-off?

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.252(a) requires an enclosed chute when material is dropped more than 20 feet to any point outside the building's exterior walls. On most one and two-story homes, crews drop shingles straight into a dumpster set below the eave.

Read the standard at osha.gov. Follow your own safety plan; this is a summary, not legal advice.

What if the roof needs more than one dumpster?

Call for a swap when the dumpster is full. We pull the full one and set an empty one in the same spot; each swap is billed as a new standard rental with its own 7 days and included tons. On heavy roofs, two 20-yard hauls can cost less than one overweight 30-yard.

Shingles only; no paint cans, tar buckets with liquid, or batteries. See what can go in a dumpster, and compare the 20-yard and 30-yard.

What does a roofing dumpster rental include?

A roofing dumpster rental includes delivery before your tear-off, pickup, 7 days and 2.5 to 5 tons depending on size. Shingle weight over that is $75 per ton by the exact pound, shown on the landfill scale ticket attached to your invoice 3 to 5 business days after pickup.

FAQ

Roofing dumpster questions

How many squares fit in a 20-yard dumpster?

About 25 squares of single-layer shingles fit in a 20-yard dumpster by weight, assuming 80-pound bundles. With lighter 3-tab bundles, a few more squares fit before the 3 included tons.

Can I mix plywood decking with shingles?

Decking can go in with shingles. It adds weight, so count it in your estimate, especially if the boards are wet or rotted.

Do roofers need to be home for the dumpster delivery?

No one needs to be on site. Mark the drop zone, clear the driveway, and the driver texts or calls 20 to 30 minutes before arrival.

How fast can you swap a full roofing dumpster?

Call when it's full and we'll schedule the swap on the next open truck. Book swaps before 3 PM for next-day service.

What does a two-layer roof cost in overage?

A 25-square, two-layer roof with 80-pound bundles weighs about 6 tons. In a 30-yard with 4 tons included, that's 2 tons over, or $150.
